Hi Dr. J., Hope this memo finds you well recovered from a Thanksgiving day filled w/gorging! I know I'm not quite back to "normal" yet, but boy did I enjoy that feast! My question is a simple one today. Do you know of a healthy recipe for horse treats or snacks? I'd like to make some for Ginseng & friends for the holiday. Thanks as always for the time you devote to this newsletter! gini
If you really want to do some serious baking for the barn, there is an entire book of recipes for horse treats -- the author is June Evers, and the title is HORSE TREATS.
If you don't want to get quite that involved, just about any granola or granola cookie recipe will make horses very happy. So will any number of other goodies: uncooked pasta (medium shells and rotini are ideal) and raisins are VERY popular with my own horses, and I've never yet met a horse that didn't like one or the other or both.
I once boarded at a barn where the owner made Christmas stockings for the horses. She wrote the horses' names on the white cuff of the red socks with a glitter pen, filled each sock with peppermint sticks, candy canes, carrots, and apples, and hung one on each stall on Christmas Eve. It looked very festive, and the boarders loved it when they came out in the morning.
If you do this, though, take the plastic wrap off the candy canes BEFORE you put them in the socks.... there were a few anxious moments when we realized that some owners didn't know that the candy canes were encased in plastic, and some horses didn't care. ;-)
